Day 23

 "O my soul, bless God!
God, my God, how great you are:
beautifully robed, dressed up in sunshine,
and all heaven stretched out for your tent.
You built your palace on the ocean deeps,
made a chariot out of clouds,
and took off on wind-wings."
Psalm 104:1-3
The Message

The rain has fallen gently
all day long
melting snow
the earth drinking deeply
filling spring's reservoirs
I too have felt Your gentle
reign
over this day
soul-heavy cares melting
my spirit drinking deeply the calm
I welcome Your steady filling
of the empty places,
the spring-like ways of
Your presence

Never Mine to Hold

Traditionally Lent is known for its call to give up something.
It has just been the past few years that I have even observed this season on the liturgical calender.
I feel very "young" in this spiritual journey of Lent and continue to grow in my learning of it.

Even as we began Lent several weeks ago, I did not have a sense of what I was to give up.
I did not want it to be devoid of meaning and so waited for God to reveal to me His ask.

It would have been much easier for me to just choose a food like chocolate or baking.
After all, this is measurable, has a simplistic nature to it and also has an end in sight.
But when God set before me worry I knew this was big...transformative... if I chose to let it be.
For sure this was not simple, was challenging to measure and held no completion date.

Yet I knew this was from God.
He knows my tendency to revert to ruminating over much that I have no control over.
And true to form there has been no shortage of circumstances and happenings
with which to practice this call for Lent.

A steady stream of events have occurred the past weeks culminating in a
"can't get closer to my heart than this" worry.
On Friday afternoon my daughter had an anaphylactic reaction to something she ate.
I administered the epipen and drove her to the hospital a block from our home.
(I can get there faster than calling an ambulance!!)
She was cared for with speed, efficiency and care and was back in our home by dinner time.
I could list with ease the many faithful ways God cared for her,
complete with Cam and Sonya skipping an end of the day class and
coming to see Ashley and support us.

But it was traumatic for my girl and my mother's heart.
Even though this is the second allergic reaction I have witnessed, it still undoes me.
Not in the moment.
In the moment I am calm and clear headed,
I suspect because I have to be!!!
It's terribly frightening for Ashley--I can't give in to the same fear.

But when it's "over" and the meds kick in and her body calms down, and my own adrenaline is depleted
then slowly the reality of what has transpired begins to sink in.
And I go through my own internal reaction.

It didn't help that processing this emergency came within a day and a half of her leaving
on an 8 hour drive with friends to spend March Break.
Nothing in me wanted to "give her up".
To let her go outside our door let alone into another province.
To relinquish her care into...
God's

Somehow I think I am the "be all and end all"!!
I'm just not sure how God would do giving the epipen!!!!

But there have been many other reminders before Friday afternoon
that seemed to scream in my ear
"SHE DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU!!!!!"

And I know that.
I know she belongs to Him.
And when I really get quiet and still with my God
there is an overriding peace that comes from
knowing His all encompassing care
But it's hard to stay in that place
of surrender
and trust.

Audrey Assad sings a very telling song entitled
"Everything is Yours."
"If everything is Yours, everything is Yours
I'm letting it go
It was never mine to hold
Never mine"

It's what I am continually reminded of these past days--
she has never been mine to hold.

I know that my journey through this Lenten season
is not going to have me "arriving"
at the end of this worry thing.
It is going to continue to need to be a practice of mine
But it is my hope and prayer
that each day I walk more fully
in His resurrection power
in His promise of new life
even on this post-Eden planet
of emergency rooms
beloved daughters
and
letting them go.

Day 22

"As for me,
I walk in my integrity;
redeem me,
O LORD,
and be gracious to me."
Psalm 26:11

Gracious God
for Your new mercies this morning
I am grateful
Yesterday's traumatic events linger
But Your truths of
assurance and
strength
the Refuge You are
is a comfort
Your all encompassing care
in the midst of "life"
does not go unnoticed
Stay close this day
Whisper calm over fear
Be strong in my weakness
Build faith out of
yesterday's dismantling of my soul
Shine hope
as bright as this morning's sun
In the safe and sure name of Jesus
I pray
Amen

Day 21

 "For the LORD your God
is bringing you into a good land,
a land with flowing streams,
with springs and underground waters
welling up in valleys and hills."
--Exodus 8:7

Can this really be?
A good land
for my heart to take up residence
a place where I am safe
in You
my soul rooted
and refreshed in
Your goodness
at peace
in Your sovereignty
This "good land" is Your
ever-present provision
I only need to make it
my habitation
Thank you
oh thank you my God
for what You have in store for me

Day 20

 "I am weary with my crying;
my throat is parched.
My eyes grow dim with waiting for God."
Psalm 69:3

I cannot fathom
that You do not grow weary
ever
It seems a familiar place for me--
one in which I am finding myself again
This sense of
soul depletion
deep weariness of spirit
I don't like it
Such a frustrating way to walk through my days
and compounded by the voices telling me of
another need
and another
wears on my tired frame even more
God
can you silence the voices I war with
lift the heart- heavy burdens
and still me
Just
still
my
soul

Day 19

 "Help, O LORD,
for there is no longer anyone who is godly;
the faithful have disappeared from humankind.
They utter lies to one another;
with flattering lips
and a double heart they speak.
May the LORD cut off all
flattering lips and the tongue
that makes great boasts."
Psalm 12:1-3

Creator of my tongue
Who hears every
encouraging or discouraging
word I speak
Govern my heart
for it is from this place
that I utter
each solitary expression--
for good or for evil
"Let the words of my mouth
and the meditations of my heart
be acceptable in Your sight
O Lord my rock
and my Redeemer."
Psalm 19:14

New Life

The struggle over
every restless thought
and
pain, fear, confusion, anguish
erased
Today
His new mercies
were perfected
in wholeness
and
you are fully alive
in His presence

In loving memory of my friend, Dale

Day 17

"No matter what map has lost you,
Love is the way."
Rob Leveridge
"No Matter What"

You are always here
for me
(sigh)
These are days
where a weariness pervades my spirit
sometimes faint
other times strong
like now
And I am overwhelmed
with the strong, sure love
You offer me
always
You are my only Place
of true rest
(sigh)

Third Sunday in Lent

"My eyes have seen Your salvation."
Luke 2:30

Why is it my eyes are so often closed
to the breadth of Your salvation?
When day after day
here and now
You long to save me
from
taskmasters
grace killers
freedom takers
rest mongers
You open to me
Your storehouse of riches
and reveal
all that is freely given
for me
This day of Sabbath rest
I sleep
weary
and receive
gratefully
salvation

Day 16

 "The Lord said to me,
'My grace is sufficient for you,
for power is made perfect in weakness.'"
--2 Corinthians 12:9

More--
This is often the yearning within
More of whatever it is in the moment
that will somehow make me a
more
put-together
esteemed
strong
woman
But more is not God's way
Less is
Less of me
leads to
more of God
in me

Grace-giver...
oh that I would
rest in Your sufficiency

Day 15

 "Remember that you fashioned me like clay;
and you will turn me into ashes again?
Did you not pour me out like milk
and curdle me like cheese?
You clothed me with skin and flesh,
and knit me together with bones and sinews.
You have granted me life and steadfast love,
and your care has preserved my spirit."
Job 10:9-12

In the palm of Your hand
my life is held
through quiet days of "autumn"
 bitter winds of "winter"
warming touches of "spring"
carefree breeze of "summer"
No matter the season
You have been my God
Your steadfast love
colours the pages
of my life

One day it's summer and the next, autumn is in the air.  It will continue like this for a good month yet, at least the summer lovers sur...
